The Cosby Show - Season 1
4 Disc DVD boxset
IN STORES AUGUST 2
UrbanWorks Entertainment
Nominated for 29 Emmys, and winner of six including Outstanding Comedy Series, The Cosby Show dominated prime-time TV from the mid to late eighties. The brainchild of popular comedian Bill Cosby, the series followed the life and times of an upper-middle class African-American family. One of the most successful sitcoms in network television history, The Cosby Show earned the #1 Nielsen rating for five consecutive years (1985-1990), and in its eight seasons it never dropped out of the Top 20. Coupled with the hit comedy series Cheers, the two shows made Thursday nights a weekly ratings sweep for NBC.
The Cosby Show is set in a New York brownstone where Heathcliff "Cliff" Huxtable (Bill Cosby) and his wife Clair (Phylicia Rashad) live with their five children - Sondra (Sabrina Le Beauf), Denise (Lisa Bonet), Theo (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), Vanessa (Tempestt Bledsoe), and Rudy (Keshia Knight Pulliam). Cliff is a popular obstetrician/gynecologist who runs his practice out of the home's basement, while Clair is a successful attorney with a local law firm. In the first season, Sondra is not seen because she's attending Princeton, but she and her boyfriend (and later husband) Elvin (Geoffrey Owens) become major characters in subsequent seasons. Most of the comic relief derives from Cliff and Clair's struggles with their children, but in general, the family gets along very well. If The Simpsons are the quintessential dysfunctional TV family, then The Cosby Show is illustrative of the ideal real-life family. Bad language is non-existent in the series, and it showcases a plethora of African-American role models such as Stevie Wonder, Lena Horne, and Sammy Davis Jr. One of the best written sitcoms since I Love Lucy, The Cosby Show holds its own in the hallowed halls of the TV elite.
The Cosby Show (Season 1) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which Theo returns from school sporting a report card with 4 D's. Believing he doesn't need to go to college, Theo is given a memorable lesson (using Monopoly money) by Cliff - prompting him to vow to do his best from now on. This episode is especially interesting given the various aspects of the family and home that are different from the rest of the series. Since this was the pilot, the characters and their lives had yet to be firmly established. Other notable episodes from Season 1 include "Mr. Fish" in which the family participates in a formal toilet funeral for Rudy's dead goldfish, and "Father's Day" in which Cliff rebels against the oddball Father's Day presents he's received over the years, such as a giant polka- dot tie with twinkling lights.
Below is a list of episodes included on The Cosby Show (Season 1) DVD:
Episode #101 "PREMIERE"
Cliff gives Theo an economics lesson with Monopoly money. It happens after Theo brings home a poor report card and claims he doesn't need good grades to get a job. Episode #104 "IS THAT MY BOY?"
Cliff is thrilled that Theo will continue the Huxtable tradition of playing football, and can hardly control his joy when his son asks to see some of his old football moves. But Cliff's delight turns to disappointment when he sees that Theo has no moves of his own, he's terrible!

Episode #107 "ONE MORE TIME"
Clair baby-sits for a newborn baby and realizes she might want to have another child. The only problem is that Cliff doesn't think it's a good idea. Episode #112 "FATHER'S DAY"

Episode #119 "CLAIR'S CASE"

Episode #120 "BACK TO THE TRACK, JACK"

Featured Artist
Chris Brown
He’s a lot like the 16-year-old boy living in the house next door to you: one minute he’s five-foot-seven, the next he’s 6’1. One minute he’s a cute little boy trying to dribble a basketball, the next a superstar point guard. One minute he’s ducking under the covers pleading for five more minutes of shut-eye, the next he’s racing through a day full of recording, performances and interviews.
With his easy-going demeanor and schoolboy charm, Chris Brown could easily be somebody that you know. With his incredible voice and a debut cd laced with clever lyrics, hypnotic tracks and impeccable vocals, he’s someone that the world will soon know.
Chris isn’t part of some A-list producer’s camp. Nor does he hail from any of those famous urban music hubs like NYC, Compton or the ATL. Straight from Tappahannock, VA --- population 2000 – Chris Brown proves that real talent, persistence and charisma still have a place in the music industry.
One listen to Chris’ 16-year-old voice and you’re tempted to draw comparisons: Michael Jackson, Tevin Campbell, and Usher. But listen a bit longer and those comparisons begin to dissipate as it becomes clear that, while Chris certainly channels the creativity of those who have come before him, he definitely has a style, a flavor and a place in music that are all his own.
His debut CD Young Love takes us on a journey through the malls, parties and teen hangouts as Chris covers a variety of subjects: A girl that he’s dying to hit the dance floor with. A girl that’s got another man. A girl that has him totally and completely head over heels in love. It’s an album about young boys, young girls -- young love.
The first single, the Scott Storch-produced “Run It,” is an irresistible up-tempo dance joint with an attention-grabbing hook. “It’s basically saying to a girl ‘If you’re at the party by yourself, show me how you get down but if your man’s here, tell me first. So basically it’s talking about runnin’ it. Go ahead, do your thing.”
The slightly braggadocios “Gimme That” finds Chris running down his credentials to a hottie. “It’s just explaining how I’m coming out, the typical bragging about yourself a little bit but not too much and telling the girl who might be older than you ‘You may be three years older , but you hot, Gimme that.’”
The title track, which was produced by The Underdogs and includes an interpolation of Blue Magic’s 70s classic “Side Show,” addresses the age-old issue of puppy love. “This song is going to be the new teenage anthem,” says Chris. “Even when teenagers really are in love with each other a lot of older people are like ‘Love? You’re barely old enough to go outside at night!’ But what they don’t know is that kids our age really do have feelings for each other so this song is basically telling older people that even though we’re young, we still love each other. I think all the teenagers can relate to it.”

Producers Dre and Vidal serve it up on the melodically pleasing “Yo,” a song simply about a boy seeing a beautiful girl that he can’t allow to escape his grasp. “It’s about a girl that you maybe saw at a party or at a mall. You’re telling your boys, ‘I need to holla at her’ but you don’t know her name and you just say ‘Yo!’”
But when Chris Brown says ‘yo’ it’s as if he gives new meaning, new depth and whole new feeling to the word. Chris’ vocals are fresh and inviting, soulful and soaring. He wraps his emotions around each and every lyric and adds the right amount of passion, fun and swagger at just the right time.
From the vocally acrobatic “Your Man Ain’t Me” to the tender, ponderous “Is This Love” (both produced by The Underdogs) to the naughty ‘Poppin’ (a tribute to a young lady’s physical attributes), Chris Brown explores the many colors of life and love as a teenage boy and he does so without being too infantile or too raunchy. “You don’t want to come out too sexual,” he explains. “I’m young. I want to appeal to people my age as well as older people. This gives me time to grow with my audience so I can make that change when I’m about 20. But for right now I don’t wanna be too kiddie but I don’t wanna be too grown.”
In selecting songs for Young Love, Chris said he simply relied on his own sense of what was hot and what was real for him and his peers. “When I hear these songs, I feel something. I know I can relate to them. I take myself out of the artist box and I become an audience member and I critique myself.”
Chris got his musical initiation early on, inspired by what he refers to as the “eclectic” taste of his parents and soaking in the sounds of his favorites: Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Anita Baker, and Aretha Franklin.
But, like most young boys, Chris was soon drawn to rap and was certain that he would be the first emcee to put Tappahannock on the map. “I was rapping,” he recalls. “I didn’t understand that I could sing until I was like 11 or 12. My mom heard me singing around the house and she said, ‘What are you doing? You really can sing!’ So then I started going to school and singing to the girls.”
By the time he was 13, Chris realized that his voice was more than just a chick magnet. And so did his mother as he began to hook his son up with various producers. “When I went in and started working, there were ups and downs but I loved it and I knew I wanted to do it for the rest of my life.”
And the rest of his life is off to a great start. Chris Brown comes to the music industry fully-loaded as not only a talented vocalist, but a versatile songwriter, an amazing dancer and a blossoming young businessman who has learned the many intricacies of the music industry. Still, he enjoys a rousing game of basketball and, despite his demanding career, he says. “I still hate waking up.”
Chris may still be a lot like the boy who lives next door to you. But not really. You’ll see.

Teairra Marí
The newly crowned "Princess Of the Roc," Teairra Marí, wasn’t even born when Eric B. and Rakim unleashed "My Melody," the hip-hop classic who’s sample is featured in her debut single, "Make Her Feel Good." But when the 17-year-old Detroit native heard the bass-heavy gem recycled she immediately knew she had found the cornerstone of her signature sound. Teairra Marí recalls, "When I heard that track, I was like, ‘This is the one, because it’s simple but also huge.’"
The enthusiasm that "Make Her Feel Good" set off at The Island Def Jam Music Group marked a defining moment in Teairra Mari’s young career, which began at age 12 when she started recording rough demos in her cousin’s basement. Despite scoring a local radio hit with one of those early songs, four years passed before Teairra Marí’s demo landed on the desk of Island Def Jam Group Chairman, Antonio ‘LA’ Reid, who signed the then 16-year-old singer on the spot at a brief meeting where she performed live. "I couldn’t believe it," she says. "I was crying because I was so happy. I feel like everyone’s behind me, which is a great feeling to have coming from a time when it seemed that nobody believed in me or wanted to hear me."
In the first creative collaboration since Shawn "Jay- Z" Carter became President of Def Jam Music Group, he and LA Reid recruited hit-making songwriter, Sean Garrett ("Lose My Breath," "Goodies," "Yeah!"), to help translate Teairra Marí’s innermost thoughts and emotions into lyrics. The two successfully completed "Make Her Feel Good," a defining first single from the R&B ingénue’s forthcoming album scheduled to be released August 2, 2005 on Roc-A- Fella Records. ‘Make Her Feel Good’ is just a peek into her full-length album, which she describes as "a girl’s dictionary."
"When Sean started writing the lyrics for ‘Make Her Feel Good,’ it was because of stories I was telling him about my guy friends," explains Teairra Marí, whose musical influences and inspirations include Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin (her grandmother sang back- up for the Queen of Soul), Prince, Sade, Patti LaBelle and Minnie Ripperton.
"I was like, ‘I’m sick of this guy; he won’t call me.’ I was sitting right there when Sean was writing the song, and I was just basically telling him about how I deal with guys. When the song was finished, I was like, ‘Yes! That is me! That’s what I go through all the time.’ Not only is it me, it’s other girls too. Other girls can relate because I know that’s how they feel. Every girl that has heard the song is like, ‘Omigod! Thank you, Teairra.’"
"Everybody at the label was excited when they heard ‘Make Her Feel Good’," Teairra Marí, remembers. "The whole building was just shaking. Jay-Z was like, ‘You have so much personality, and I love it.’" Because of the real and uncensored emotion portrayed in the song, Shawn Carter, felt Teairra Marí’s debut album was a natural to be released under the Roc-A-Fella Records brand.
In addition to honestly representing a young woman’s point of view on life, Teairra Marí is excited about representing for her hometown, Detroit. "Right now, everything’s all about the whole Southern movement, so me coming in from the Midwest is like a breath of fresh air. There’s no other city in America like Detroit. It’s just fly, and I love it. Our swagger, the way we dress—everything is so different and laid back, which is how I am. You walk up the street and everybody has a different colored mink, Cartier glasses— everything. We like to floss and be seen, so we don’t have to say much. Every time someone sees me, they’re like, ‘Girl, you sharp!’ and I’m like, ‘Yes, I’m from Detroit.’"
This is just the beginning.

Bow Wow
Ask Bow Wow what life is like now that's he's 18 and the music, film and television powerhouse pulls no punches. "I'm maturing," he says. "I'm becoming a man, but staying humble. I'm staying myself and most importantly, I'm trying to make good movies and music for my fans. Every one in hip-hop talks about staying real and what that means to me is staying down to earth, not getting cocky. When I say, 'do you,' that means 'be yourself.' That's what this album is all about."
The name of Bow Wow's fourth Sony album is Wanted and whether he's letting fans know about his life, giving the ladies something, partying with the fellas or lacing you with a laid back vibe, Wanted is Bow Wow at his most focused, playful and in control. Featuring guest appearances from some of the hottest names in music--like Ciara and Snoop Dogg--Wanted truly reflects the way Bow Wow is, right now.
As fans of the multi-platinum entertainer know, any time Bow Wow makes a record, it's an event, but even by Bow Wow's standards, Wanted is cause for celebration. Credit the re-teaming of Bow Wow with superstar producer and mogul Jermaine Dupri. While 2003's Unleashed, executive produced by Bow Wow, ushered in the artist's mature new vibe, this time around Bow Wow knew he wanted to get back together with Dupri.
"I've got no regrets about Unleashed and was really glad I had the chance to work with other producers," Bow Wow admits, "but Jermaine is like family. He's like my big brother and working with him is like being home. I just put my foot down and said, 'I'm not getting back into the studio unless Jermaine is there and he does my entire record.' You just can't mess with our chemistry."
Want proof of that chemistry? Just check out tracks like the hard-hitting "Do You." "That's just me reclaiming my throne!," exclaims Bow Wow. "It's my way of letting everybody know that even if I'm gone for a decade, this is still my house and I'm putting my paw print on things and making sure that everybody knows what's going on."
Something that's definitely going on is "Caviar," a slinky southern-fried jam that features Bow Wow and Snoop Dogg (who appeared on Bow's debut) having mad fun. "That's a real feel good party record with me and Snoop, doing what we do…again," says Bow Wow.
Another high profile collaboration is "Like You," featuring Ciara. "That's a special record," Bow Wow explains. "It's a girl's song and I always make sure that I do something for the ladies because they've always been so supportive and 'Like You' is something that they can relate to because everything that Ciara and I are singing about is real."
Equally real and totally hyped up is "Go," which Bow Wow declares "is for the kids. It's an upbeat, way up-tempo crunk record. It's got this great chorus and totally makes a statement. That record is just an adrenalin rush!"
A major reason for that rush is that Bow Wow has taken a major hand in the song and music writing, making Wanted an extremely personal experience. '"Everything I write about happens in my life," Bow Wow offers. "I talk about everything, from going to the mall, to being on '106th and Park' to shopping, my career, my movies, TV shows, my family. Everything. My style of rapping is bringing my world to ya'll. Letting ya'll know what's really going on inside the world of Bow Wow. I think that's why going into the studio and coming up with rhymes is such a natural thing for me to do because I'm just expressing what my life is all about."
Bow Wow has been letting his fans inside his world from a young age. Born in Ohio (he now lives in Atlanta), Bow Wow was a naturally gifted hip-hop child prodigy. When he was just six and still answering to the name Shad Moss, he appeared on the popular "The Arsenio Hall Show," where he met legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. Snoop was so taken with Shad's charisma and skills that he dubbed him "Lil Bow Wow" and invited the then pint-sized microphone fiend to join the "Chronic Tour." Soon, word began to filter throughout the hip-hop and pop communities about the cute little kid with the vicious flow.
In 2000 Bow Wow brought that flow and his undeniable mass appeal to the top of the charts courtesy of his debut album, Beware of Dog. Thanks to infectious singles like "Bounce With Me," which topped both the rap and R&B charts, and high profile gigs like opening up for *NSYNC and appearing with Madonna to open the 2001 Grammy Awards ceremony, Beware of Dog would sell more than 2 million copies with Bow Wow emerging as the most talked about young rapper in the game. He kept the buzz growing with 2001's follow-up Doggy Bag (which went gold and platinum) and the sold-out "Scream" arena tours.
Along with his own albums, Bow Wow popped up on the soundtracks for the films "Wild Wild West" and "Big Momma's House." In 2002, Bow Wow made his move from the recording studio to the big screen with the starring role in "Like Mike" (one of the 50 top grossing films of 2002) which led to a role in the smash comedy "Johnson Family Vacation" in 2003. "Acting is something that I feel like is really gonna be crazy for me," Bow Wow says, and his hunch is paying off. Watch for Bow Wow in a new movie, "Roll Bounce," a teenage skater-dramedy set in the late 1970s, slated for an autumn release; the headline slot on this summer's hotly-anticipated "Scream IV Tour" ; and his own self-titled television series premiering on the WB Network this fall.
One listen to Wanted and you can tell that four albums into his career, Bow Wow is just getting started. Whether kicking it with the guys or whispering to the females, Bow Wow is continuing to deliver edgy but tender rhymes that are both true to himself and universal in their appeal. Asked what drives him and Bow Wow grins. "I know what I gotta do," he says, "I'm still that same threat that I was when I was 13. No matter what people say I'm still gonna be at it. I'm gonna keep being me and having fun with it."

Uness
Having debuted his singing career as a 6-year-old choir vocalist, Uness has discovered early on in his life the complexities of melodies and harmonies. By the age of 10, he had begun mixing the sounds of Pop music, then lead by male artists such as BoyzIImen, the Backstreet Boys, Nsync, Usher and Micheal Jackson to his experience.
This new musical approach had rightfully earned him the "little family Star" title in the family big parties as he would entertain guests with his passionate sense of interpretation.
At the age of 15, Uness's father offered him a guitar. After only 2 weeks, uness learned to play guitar and gradually improved his newly acquired skills, using his instrument to its highest capacities. He recorded his first demo at the age of 16, on a small recorder in his room, using tapes and a microphone. He developed his harmony skills, all on his own, to the point where he can successfully harmonize any melody without a hitch.
His dedication to music had only intensified after his move to Montreal, Canada. A time, in which he dedicated 2 whole years of intense, if not obsessive, recording time on his computer, recognizing that music was his first love.
Deciding to fully commit to music was the first step to his self-creation as an artist. Uness began to open his scope of music genre and discovered artists such as Musiq Soulchild, India Arie and Brian Mcknight. These three Songwriters/Artists touched his heart with their magic and helped to make him better then before. They inspired him in his singing, writing and music composition.
Uness showcased in various school productions. He became famous in the high school scene as "The guy who could sing" singing in graduation Proms, Karaoke, Christmas and Valentine shows.
Uness Met Benoit Babin, a genius writer/producer who helped him produce and record his first song in a professional recording studio. A hit was born: U know what.
The studio experience was overwhelming for all the parties involved in that Uness's natural abilities to sing as expected of him, right on key, after a maximum of two to three takes, and nailing the harmonies right away, really impressed the people working with him. Let us not forget to mention his creative input throughout the composition process.
Realizing that they had something very rare between their hands, a young artist of extreme talent and music maturity, the producers encouraged Uness to keep writing and creating, while they activated the wheels to set things in motion for him.
A start is being created and it is just a matter of time before the whole world discovers UNESS!
In the winter of 2002, Uness meets Michael Sciscente, president of a new independent record label called Nu blood Records, which specializes in Canadian urban music. They believed right away in Uness's talent and after months of negotiation, Nu Blood Records signed Uness for a recording contract on the 1st of January 2003. After months of hard work spent at the studio, over 30 songs were written, with the help of many talented producers from all over the world such as D'Klay Produktionz and Declau Productions.
The motion Picture Giant Cinelande has joined the journey to support this project and has also produced Uness's first music video: Arabian Girl.
Arabian Girl was released in the summer of 2003 and the response was very surprising: The song reached many Canadian dance and urban charts.
The time has come for Uness to release his second single Beautiful (because of you) and the debut Album Belly dancers due end of summer 2004.
"Music is the ability to reach people's feelings, but it is also a way to reach your own heart and mind. My songs have been my diary; they all symbolize a certain point in my life. Sometimes good moments of happiness which we all cherish, sometimes hard and sad times we tend to forget about. Good or bad, these memories can only make you a better person, and sometimes knowing yourself can make life a better place to be."
Raven
You don’t need psychic powers to know that Raven’s solo recording career is taking flight. The dynamic teen star – who has been a record-setting recording artist since the age of five -- has recently released several high-rotation singles, platinum motion picture soundtracks, and has sung for her award-winning “That’s So Raven” Disney Channel show, and in musical diva roles in a growing list of major films. Her latest accomplishments include stellar contributions to the new double-disc “That’s So Raven” soundtrack album -- released May 18, 2004 -- and her upcoming studio CD, scheduled for release this fall.
“It’s going to be a whole new sound. I want to make an album that mates new soul with alternative with hip hop,” Raven says of the forthcoming disc. “I enjoy all different types of music, from 50 Cent to Avril Lavigne, from the Buddah Bar CDs to Bjork. I love the different qualities of each musical style, and love the freedom to mix it all up to create my own sound.”
Raven’s new studio CD will follow hot on the heels of a string of soundtrack successes, including her funky rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” for the hit Eddie Murphy film The Haunted Mansion; her spirited reinvention of Hugh Masekela’s #1 R&B hit “Grazing in the Grass” which led the pack on Walt Disney’s The Lion King 1½ soundtrack album; “Circle of Life” for The Lion King Platinum Edition DVD and soundtrack CD; and the inspiring “True To Your Heart” from Disneymania 2. Her two newest tracks are forthcoming in The Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack – including a duet with the phenomenal Julie Andrews -- and Raven appears in the film as well. Raven also co-wrote the song “This is My Time” (with producer/songwriter Matthew Gerrard).
Raven earned her first platinum album with the soundtrack CD for “The Cheetah Girls,” the Disney Channel’s first musical movie, produced by Whitney Houston. The film starred Raven in her bigger-than-life singing role as diva Galleria Garibaldi, and its success has inspired an upcoming TV series. “It’s about four talented girls who sing, dance, and dream of becoming stars,” says Raven. “Being the leader, I fall out to go for the solo spotlight ’cause I feel I’m the bomb. But in the end I realize that my friends are more important.” Raven’s grrrrrl power vocals spice up such tracks as “Cheetah Sisters,” “Together We Can,” and the Disney radio favorite “Cinderella.”
But Raven’s current popularity also stems from her “That’s So Raven” sit-com role as Raven Baxter, a confident, charismatic teen whose ability to see flashes of the future compels her to embark on a series of comical misadventures. That Disney Channel original comedy series is, Raven proudly acknowledges, the first show ever to be named after its African-American female star. “I was very fortunate,” says the star and singer of the show’s theme song, “and I try to represent.” Her hard work was rewarded in 2004 when Raven won the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award for Best Television Actress and the prestigious NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children's Program.
Concurrent with her leading role on "That's So Raven," she also plays the voice of Monique, a recurring role on Disney Channel's animated action/comedy “Kim Possible,” and is in the upcoming film Fat Albert.
Raven is also ready to reign supreme in “Sparkle,” taking the lead in a musical remake of the 1976 classic about a Supremes-like group of singing sisters struggling through the trials and tribulations of the music industry. Raven’s honored to play the role: “It's a very, very significant film. It’s very important to my people," she says.
Significantly, Raven has also won the starring role in All-American Girl from Walt Disney Studios and the producers of The Princess Diaries and The Cheetah Girls. Raven will play Samantha Madison, a girl who inadvertently saves the life of the president of the United States and becomes a hero.
Performing, of course, is nothing new for Raven (formerly credited as Raven-Symone) who began her acting career at the age of three and was one of the youngest singers ever on “Star Search.” Previously known as Olivia from the long-running hit series "The Cosby Show" and Nicole in "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper," Raven has also made dozens of guest appearances in everything from “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and Alex Haley’s “Queen” to “Space Ghost.”
“I’ve always felt that singing has half of my heart and acting has the other," says the versatile vocalist who began her recording career at the age of five when she became the youngest singer ever to sign with MCA Records. Notably, her first hit single, “That’s What Little Girls Are Made Of,” was the first success from songwriter Missy Elliot. That same year, Raven debuted on Broadway with the Boys Choir of Harlem for their 25th Anniversary celebration.
Raven released her debut album Here's To New Dreams in 1989 and Undeniable in 1999. She has commanded the concert stage on “Soul Train” (along with Aaron Hall and Tag Team), a tour of the musical production “A Mother’s Prayer,” and, impressively, as the opening performer for the 1999 'N Sync concert tour.
“I just performed 'Superstition' on the ‘Motown 45’ television special and doing a Disneymania concert for MusicChoice/DIRECTV in June." As if that’s enough, she’s also developing other film projects to be announced in the near future.
"I've got a lot of stuff going,” Raven smiles. “I’d better go get a little sleep.”

JoJo
A singer. A songwriter. A prodigy. With just a few notes, she's made some of the most influential men and women in America stop in
their tracks to find her, and meet her. She possesses a rare talent that has enchanted talk show hosts, celebrities and audiences
throughout the United States. And she's determined to take the music world by storm.
Her name is JoJo.
In the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts JoJo grew up in a home filled with song. Her mother, a church soloist and trained musical
theater performer, would practice hymns and arias alike while a young JoJo watched, listened and learned. She imitated her mother's
incredible range as well as the sounds that breezed through the family's home stereo: Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Whitney
Houston and Etta James. "When I was two years old, I would sing nursery rhymes. I would do riffs on them and make them jazzy," JoJo
remembers. It was at this early age that she taught herself to interpret the pop and blues tunes she heard with her own distinctive
and unique style.
Eager to perform in venues other than her living room, JoJo searched for her first big break. She found it in a small newspaper
clipping that advertised an audition for CBS-TV's Kids Say the Darndest Things On The Road In Boston. Her soul and passion left the
producers speechless and she was immediately given a spot to perform. Once JoJo hit the stage, Bill Cosby, the show's host, asked
her to sing a little something for the people-packed Faneuil Hall. JoJo belted out a show-stopping rendition of Aretha Franklin's
"Respect" which earned her an overwhelming response from the audience. (As well as from Bill Cosby, himself.) A phone call from The
Oprah Winfrey show followed soon after, inviting the young girl to appear on the show. "When it came to performing, I just had no
fear," says JoJo.
All at once things began to happen. Calls from talk show producers and music festival organizers began to pour in. JoJo did them
all, singing at places as diverse as a Boston Celtics basketball game and the Republican National Convention. But it was at
McDonald's 2001 Gospelfest (at Town Hall in New York City) where JoJo brought down the house with one single song. On a bill with
music greats such as Melba Moore, JoJo let loose her pipes on "I Believe in You and Me," Whitney Houston's smash hit from The
Preacher's Wife. "The place went crazy!" JoJo exclaims. "They gave me a standing ovation, and when I walked off stage, Cissy
Houston, Whitney's mother, said to me 'You did a great job out there.'" Such a glowing endorsement was simply priceless to the young
singer.
While appearing on the TV show, America's Most Talented Kids, JoJo was noticed by a man in the audience who introduced her to
Vincent Herbert, famed producer and owner of Da Family Entertainment. JoJo was signed to Da Family and offered two major recording
contracts before finding her perfect match with Barry Hankerson and his label Blackground Records, home to Toni Braxton, Timbaland &
Magoo, and the late Aaliyah.
After being signed to Blackground, JoJo spent the next four months recording tracks for her self-titled debut in New York, Miami and
Los Angeles, working closely with famed producers such as Soulshock & Karlin (Whitney Houston, Craig David), Vincent Herbert
(Destiny's Child, Toni Braxton), Mike City (Brandy), Brian Morgan (SWV), The Underdogs (Tyrese, Ruben Studdard), and writer Static
(Aaliyah, Ginuwine). "It was a great experience working with them in the studio. Everyone had such an incredible vibe, and that
comes through in the songs," JoJo enthuses.
The album showcases JoJo's talent, not only as a singer, but as a songwriter as well. She penned three tracks for JoJo, including:
"Keep On Keepin' On", "Yes or No", and "Sunshine". Her favorite cut, "Keep On Keepin' On" is especially close to her heart. "It was
really hard when I was younger. We were the lowest income people in our town," she explains. "My mom and I lived in a rundown
one-bedroom apartment and we lived off very little money. I wrote "Keep On Keepin' On" because I knew I wasn't the only one going
through hard times," she says.
The final product is an album infused with assured, confident vocals and lyrics that speak way beyond JoJo's tender years. The
ballads are deep and soul-filled, and the up-tempo tracks are bumping and make you want to dance. Her music strikes the perfect
balance between attitude and innocence-which is exactly what JoJo is all about.
