Interview Questions
LMF: Why don't we start with you guys introducing yourselves?
BG: We are the Barlow sisters- Becca, Alyssa, and Lauren. We’ve grown up in
Elgin, IL- outside of Chicago. We’ve been playing music as a family our
whole lives- and became BarlowGirl in the last few years.
LMF: Can you guys tell us how BarlowGirl began?
BG: We started as a back up band for our dad who was the children’s music
minister at Willow Creek Church in Chicago. That is where we learned to
play our different instruments and gained early stage experience.
Eventually, we evolved into what BarlowGirl is today.
LMF: Who came up with the name BarlowGirl?
BG: All three of us came up with it together, Everyone has always called us the Barlow girls.
Really it wouldn’t matter what we had decided to call ourselves, we would always be known as
the Barlow girls. So we put it together as BarlowGirl.
LMF: Describe your music to someone who has never heard it.
BG: It is: personal, guitar driven, vocal driven girl rock.
LMF: Who are some of your inspirations when it comes to music?
BG: Beatles, Switchfoot, Glen Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, PFR, Broadway Musicals,
Hanson
LMF: Who writes most of the music?
BG: We all do as a family. Becca writes chords and music, Lauren and I come up
with melodies and lyrics. Then together we work almost everything else out,
it’s a family thing.
LMF: If you could perform with anyone out there, who would it be?
BG: I would love to perform with DC Talk, if they came back in a reunion, if
not, then I would want it to be with Toby Mac.
LMF: Do you guys have any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
BG: Lauren has the most- she is the klutzy one. We had a nerve-racking show; it
was in front of a whole bunch of big name judges. We were playing and we
realized that Lauren had missed two beats. Becca and I turned around and saw
that she had her drumstick stuck in her pigtail.
LMF: What do you guys like better, recording in the studio or performing live?
BG: For me, they are equal. There are so many parts of being in the studio that
I absolutely love. But nothing beats playing live. They are both so equal to
me.
LMF: What is your favorite song on the album and why?
BG: Never Alone, we love playing that song. We get to just rock out - as a girl
that’s awesome. Secondly, there was a the time in my life when I was
struggling and couldn’t hear God. That song reminds me of the promise that
he will never leave. It takes me back to when God reminded me of that. I can
still turn the song on and it encourages me when I feel that I can’t hear
Him.
LMF: If you could date one celebrity out there who would it be?
BG: My future husband… I don’t date, and the only person I want to have my
first date with would be the man that is going to be my future husband. J
LMF: What is the greatest memory in your career so far?
BG: My greatest memories are hearing the stories of audience members and how a
song has changed their life. Stories on people about to get a divorce, or
are in the hospital with a brain tumor and something about our songs touched
them. Those instances have been the most memorable and it reminds me of why
I am doing this in the first place, when I can connect who God is to people.
LMF: What is the one food you could eat 24/7?
BG: It’s a toss up between cucumbers and cookie dough.
LMF: What CD would we find in your CD player right now?
BG: Tree 63
LMF: Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?
BG: I would like to see myself as a stronger musician in the areas of
songwriting, and performing. I see myself growing a lot as a performer and
as a musician. Of more priority than being a good musician, I see myself
growing personally, becoming a stronger person in my faith and closer to
God. I desire to be more secure as a person and more secure in the calling
God has placed on my life. Married! I would love to get married.
LMF: What message do you want to give to all your fans out there?
BG: To let the world know that God can be trusted and has wonderful things for
us if we say yes.
